Nightwood. by Djuna Barnes | Dec 31, 1980. 3.0 out of 5 stars 1. Hardcover AbeBooks Books, art & collectibles: Djuna Barnes' extraordinary novel, Nightwood, documents the lives of Americans and Europeans in Paris in the decadent roaring twenties. Now recognised as a twentieth-century classic, the influence of Djuna Barnes's novel has been, and continues to be, exceptional.'For brilliance and formal beauty few novels of any age can compare with it.' Djuna Barnes, en av modernismens stora ikoner, var en mästare i novellgenren. Ändå var hon sparsam med att återpublicera novellerna. När hon väl gjorde det så reviderade hon dem ofta så mycket att det blev nya texter.

Born June 12, 1892, Barnes came of age in the height of the Modernist movement. At age 20, she moved to New York City with her mother and three of her brothers and there began a lifelong study of art and literature that led her to briefly attend the Pratt Institute. Djuna Barnes once said that “there is always more surface to a shattered object than a whole object,” and the statement is provocative when considering her own writing and art.

Born in New York, Djuna Barnes was home schooled in an intellectual household. Though she married at 18, she left her husband shortly thereafter. At 20 she attended Pratt Institute but dropped out to pursue a career in journalism. Notable work of this period includes a poetry volume The Book of Repulsive Women (1915) and several one act plays for the Provincetown Players.

These events inspired Barnes greatest work Nightwood (1936). Barnes became severely alcoholic in the late 1930’s and did not write much until 1958, when she wrote The Abbott later introduced Wood to poet Djuna Barnes, and made photographic portraits of both of them. Wood also had a brief relationship with the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay during the early 1920s.
